History

Was named top rookie for the Erie Otters in 2002-03. Played for Team OHL in the 2004 Canada-Russia Challenge Series. Played in the 2005 CHL Top Prospects Game.

2006-07: Blunden didn’t score in nine games during a November call-up with the Hawks, but showed great energy, averaging 11:23 on the third and fourth lines and delivered a lot of big hits. A big man and a good skater who is always around the action, Blunden suffered a season-ending shoulder injury about halfway through the year.

2007-08: Blunden was one of Rockford’s steadier players last season, putting up 37 points in 74 regular season games and adding another four points in 12 playoff games. Maybe the most important number, however, was the 74 regular-season games he played in, which ranked second on the team and was also a career-high for him. Given his injury-prone past, Blunden’s good health was just what the IceHogs were looking for.

Talent Analysis

Blunden has the size that scouts drool over and he isn’t shy about using his frame to bang and crash in the corners. He hasn’t shown the hands yet to be a big scorer, but he may be a late bloomer in that regard and as long as he is willing to go hard to the net and play in the trenches he will get his share of points.

Future

Has the size and skating ability to play at the next level, whether that is as a power forward or a bump and grinder remains to be seen. A history of fairly serious injuries going back to his junior career has to be a concern.
